We heard that the CNJ unit was coming on 21J and it is one of my favorite engines so we went to see it in Manor. I had seen it a few weeks ago on the Mon line but it was only by luck so I wasn't able to get any pictures. It was leading which made it even better! Score Charlie - 14, Andy - 12! -Charlie

Hearing that the Central Of Georgia was coming west on an extra 23Z, I3Z, we headed to Ardara to catch it. It was unfortunately dark by the time it came so we only bothered to get a time exposure shot which turned out pretty neat. Score Charlie - 14, Andy - 11! Enjoy the picture and video! -Charlie The last operating NS locomotive wearing Conrail paint and markings, SD50 #5424, was rumored to be heading to the Juniata Shops in Altoona, PA to be rebuilt into an SD40E. We have been watching reported sightings for the past several weeks, starting as far south as Georgia. The loco was part of the consist on several trains running through Tennessee, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia and lastly to Conway Yard in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Finally on 7/21/13 about 4:10 pm, I got a call from Jacob Leukhardt that #5424 had been spotted in Leetsdale 45 minutes earlier and was on the move headed east. With little time to spare, I made a dash for Manor, my favorite railfanning spot, to await its arrival. Sadly, Charlie was not home to join me. After a short wait, eastbound freight train #10A could be heard climbing the grade through Irwin and its headlights came into view. The Conrail unit was the 4th loco in the consist, but I was able to squeeze off two shots as it passed by. It did indeed arrive in Altoona later that evening and is currently in the yard at Juniata Shops awaiting its transformation. Over 14 years after Conrail was split up, this was the last loco to wear blue paint. The end of an era has come -- farewell BIG BLUE! ~ Andy After hearing that the Wabash was leading a 13G last Tuesday my dad and I rushed to pick up my friend Jacob and then went trackside in Manor. It wasn't long before the locomotive came rushing around the bend. Afterwards we went to see the Pennsylvanian at Wegley. All of these pictures were taken by my dad. Heritage Count Dad - 10 Charlie - 13. This morning my dad took a little time off work so we could go and see the EB Pennsylvanian 42 (NS symbol 04T) with a special locomotive on it. The 40th anniversary Phase 3 P42DC #145 was pulling the train this morning. My dad dropped me off at the staightaway in Manor and he went down a little farther to the S curve. We did this so that using walkie talkies I could let my dad know when it was coming a little in advance and he could get a neat shot of it coming around the bend. It was really neat to see! I've now seen all three phase 3 Amtrak heritage engines! While we were waiting we saw a WB oil train with two BNSF units on it! Enjoy the pictures and video! -Charlie Today was a very busy day in Pittsburgh for NS's Heritage fleet - six of the special locos passed through the area! The Wabash unit came though early today on the Conemaugh line headed for Enola, and the Lehigh Valley, Penn Central, and Illinois Terminal units were all on the Pittsburgh line during daylight hours. Charlie had the good fortune to see the Central of New Jersey loco (one of his favorites) on the Mon line headed south late morning; unfortunately without a camera. My "smart" phone (smarter than me anyhow) alerted me that the Savannah & Atlanta was coming through just after leaving work and I was able to snap the photo above on the curve in Manor Borough after just five minutes waiting - great timing! Who says that Chicago is the railroading center of our country????? The score: Charlie:12, Andy: 9.
- Andy Happy 4th of July! I just wanted to share these pictures and video of Monday's 65R with two heritage units on it! 65R is a WB empty oil train and it had the Penn Central and Illinois Terminal heritage engines on the front with a DPU on the back. My dad and I hadn't seen either of these so after we saw that it was headed this way I tracked it and listened to the Altoona radio feed to get a good estimate on when they where coming. When I knew they where getting close I let my dad know that it was time so he took a late lunch break and we saw it in Penn Borough! Score is now Charlie - 11 Dad - 8! -Charlie Now that I'm home from camp I can write about my most recent railfanning day. Dan took me railfanning that day and we saw lots! Including some steel mill action and a surprise encounter with the Virginian heritage unit! Enjoy the pictures and videos! -Charlie It is amazing that this caboose hassurvived this long in C&O paint. Even though it is rusted and graffitied you can still make out the C&O logo. Soon after this we were told to leave because we were on private property. If they don't want railfans to come in they should really put up a sign saying that it is public property. |
