From my perspective, passenger rail travel has tremendous potential to supplement highway and air travel, both of which are heavily subsidized by the Federal Government. There are very few passenger trains in the world that make a profit, yet they are an important and valuable part of the transportation system, particularly in Europe. Considering the other expenditures of government, I think investment in passenger rail service is a bargain.
